How many kilometres (on average) do vegetables and fruit have to travel before they reach the consumer?

You will be surprised… approximately 32,000 kilometres!

This is quite a large number of ‘food miles’. Moreover, these ‘food miles’ will, to a large extent, influence the consumer behaviour, NOW as well as in the FUTURE. This mainly relates to the impact on the environment. Gomez Fresh explicitly endeavours to limit these ‘‘food miles’.

The transport is the final link for our customers (growers and clients), but certainly an extremely crucial link. The products must be transported as professionally as possible. Gomez Fresh therefore only collaborates with very reputable logistical service providers. They contribute to the optimization of the logistical process.

According to Gomez Fresh, there are three logistical processes:

• Cultivation
The product is first transported internally from the plant to a cold-storage room. Then from the cold-storage room to the shed and/or packaging department. In order prevent product speculation and unnecessary handling, ‘whenever possible’ everything takes place at the growing location.

• Gomez Fresh
Gomez Fresh checks the quality of the product to be loaded. This check can be performed by our own inspection team or by an external inspection bureau. The product is not sent to the inspection team; the inspection team comes to the product.

• Transporter
Various lorries continually drive through the Netherlands in order to load products at the growers. Immediately after loading, the transporter drives to the end customer, without any unnecessary intermediate stops on the way. This enables us to minimize the aforementioned “food miles”.

We want a product that has a maximum storage life and optimal traceability, and to achieve maximum reduction in CO-2 at minimal cost.
